Submit a Video to 2015 #OWPthrowdown Contest & Win a Kindle, Dramatists … – Broadway World

The Original Works Monologue Throwdown, or #OWPthrowdown, is an online contest where theatre fans and practitioners at all levels can participate by recording a video of themselves performing a monologue from an Original Works Publishing title.

Performers may submit a video to OWP via YouTube or Vimeo from January 15 – June 1, 2015. One performer will win a brand new Kindle Fire HD and a $ 50 Kindle gift card. The playwright of the winning monologue wins a year of free membership in the Dramatists Guild.

“A great audition monologue is something every actor and actress needs. You always want that killer speech in your back pocket.” said OWP president Jason Aaron Goldberg. “Our goal with the throwdown was to give performers an incentive to find and prepare a strong audition piece in the new year, along with the added benefit of possibly winning a really cool toy. We hope it will become an annual event.”

Original Works was the first play publishing and licensing company to make their titles available as eBooks via Kindle and therefore making a new Kindle the prize was an obvious choice. Adding a year free Dramatists Guild membership was important to Goldberg because the guild is an incredibly valuable resource and aid for playwrights nationwide. “Playwrights are a kind of fraternity, we’re all connected by the storm of writing and trying to get produced, the Guild is our umbrella.”

HOW TO THROWDOWN:

1. Make a video where you perform a monologue (under 2 minutes) from any play in the OWP catalog. (Any play means any play from any category. Do not limit yourself by only looking in the Monologues section.)
2. Upload the video to YouTube or Vimeo.
3. Send an official entry email to – throwdown@originalworksonline.com with your name, play title, character name and a link to your video. (Do not email video files.)
4. Share your video on social media with the hashtag #OWPthrowdown.
5. There is no fee to enter.
6. You do not need to share the video to be eligible to win. You may set your video to “unlisted” or “private” when you upload. Just be sure OWP has the correct link to view your entry.

WHAT YOU WIN:

1. Performer of the winning monologue receives a new Kindle Fire (HD series) and a $ 50 Kindle gift card.
2. Playwright of the monologue used in winning video receives 1 year free membership to the Dramatists Guild of America. (If playwright is already a member their next year of dues will be free.)

SALINA, Okla. – It happened when he was in high school, the realization of what he wanted to do the rest of his life. Now Kansas grad Justin Kindle is living his dream as a coach and teacher in Salina, Oklahoma.

Amazon’s Latest Kindle Unlimited Program Irks Authors – Bidness ETC

Amazon Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMZN) latest offering, the "Kindle Unlimited" program, has been openly welcomed by consumers but has caused a stir among many authors, particularly the self-publishing ones. This Kindle Unlimited service (more commonly known as KU) allows you access to all the books you can possibly read in a month. For a fee just below $ 10 (monthly), Amazon's Kindle users are able to get unlimited access to a library of a little less than 700,000 books.

With Spotify and Netflix Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NFLX) enormous success, KU was designed to offer something similar to its users for a low price. But sadly, this low price translates into reduced profits for the authors, which has angered and upset most. Self-published writers that use this service are forced to sell on Amazon exclusively, thus shutting down opportunities to earn a living from other platforms such as Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), and Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE:BKS).

Amazon has not officially commented on the developing story, but the authors have not been shy to voice their opinions through various message boards and news reports. One particular author has claimed that he has seen his income plummet almost 75% once the Kindle Unlimited service was put into effect. Young people who left their regular jobs to pursue their dream of becoming renowned authors have no option but to return to the workforce, which in turn gives them less time to focus on their book-writing career.

While some may feel that the authors are not obliged to participate in the program and can choose to opt out anytime makes it non-issue, the problem is a little more complicated; Amazon is such a dominant force in the publishing world that it has monopolistic power over the whole industry. Since KU is popular for its readers, it will most certainly benefit the few authors who are able to take a hit on profits and stay on the program, further hurting the ones who aren't on it.

This isn't the first time this has happened though. Amazon has had disagreements with authors in the past as well. Mainstream novelists often voiced their concern to the public and the media. In its long-battled feud with publishing company Hatchette, Amazon actively engaged in steps to discourage the sale of certain book titles. Given the history, people fear that if they do not take part in the KU program, they could end up being blacklisted and their books will not be promoted.

What is Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited is a new feature from Amazon that gives users access to more than 700,000 books and thousands of audiobooks. The feature cost $ 9.99 a month and can be accessed on any device that has access to the Kindle app.

Kindle Unlimited users only need to look for the "Read for Free" button next to a book in the Kindle Store to take advantage of the feature. Several books in the public domain are included in the feature and they are matched up with their audiobook counterparts.

Kindle Unlimited is currently only available to customers in the Unites States. However, Amazon does plan to expand it to other areas in the future. Users who want to check the service out can sign up for a free 30-day trial.

Back in the day when books were printed in actual ink on real paper, it was a cinch to pass books around the family. I vividly recall my sisters and me sharing the latest Nancy Drew Mystery stories, sometimes hiding under the covers reading them by flashlight way past our bedtimes. Now there’s Amazon to the rescue with “Family Library.” With Family Library, you can link two Amazon accounts and share books across devices, including your Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Generation and other compatible Amazon devices and apps. Plus, books or other content like audiobooks, apps and games from either account can also be added to up to four child profiles.

But you don’t have to own an actual Kindle e-reader to take advantage of e-books for your family. The Kindle app for Mac and PC turns your laptop or desktop into a Kindle.  There’s also an app for iOS and Android that does the same thing for your mobile gadgets. Both adults will need their own Amazon accounts, but children do not need an Amazon account in order to have a profile. Existing Amazon FreeTime and Kindle FreeTime child profiles will be automatically added to your household.

1. PYJAMAS

Jennifer and I both love duvet days and quite often we don’t even plan them, they just kind of happen.

We’ll start the day with a coffee and a chat and then there will be more coffee and more chat and before long it’s 4pm and neither of us are dressed.

We live a pretty relaxed life in Florida but if we’ve both been working hard, once we get a break, we will spend up to a week in our pyjamas.

I have to say though, I have never ventured into onesie territory.

The traditional checked flannel look suits me just fine.

2. CAPPUCCINOS

I am an ardent lover of caffeine and the first thing I do once I’m out of bed is to fire up the Nespresso machine.

I like to think my cappuccinos are rather legendary as visitors always tell me how good they are.

My secret is that I always whisk the milk and I add a touch of cream too.

Then I serve them up with warm Danish pastries and croissants.

These days people seem to abstain from just about everything.

But in my opinion while being healthy is fine, life really is for living, which is why I always finish each day with a cigarette and a big cup of coffee.

3. SCRIPT WRITING SOFTWARE

I am dyslexic but am glad to say that it hasn’t stopped me from becoming a successful writer as I believe that having original ideas is so much more important than the ability to spell.

After all, that is what editors are for.

I have the most amazing piece of software on my Mac computer called Scriptware, which alerts me to all sorts of inconsistencies in my work.

If for instance, I write some dialogue for a character that isn’t actually in the room, it will let me know straightaway.

It is like having a benevolent school mistress peering over your shoulder while you are working.

4. KINDLE

I love reading and I take my Kindle everywhere with me.

I prefer the touch and smell of a real book but the Kindle is a real winner when it comes to travelling as you can effectively pack about 120 books into your suitcase.

I enjoy non–fiction almost as much as fiction and I love to read anything about aircraft and rocks, which I know makes me sound like a bit of a bore.

But you can’t really beat a good biography as I am fascinated to learn how people have navigated life’s triumphs and challenges.

At the moment I’m reading a book about Henry Kissinger’s life and I can’t put it down.

5. RECLINING CHAIR

I am an accomplished lounger and I couldn’t be without my magical reclining chair.

It is so spacious that my grandsons, who all live on the same street as us, can all sit on it together.

Jennifer and I are telly addicts and my chair is the perfect place to waste a few hours.

We recently devoured the first three series of Game Of Thrones in a few days and didn’t leave that chair for hours on end, which was wonderful.

Blackburn’s best-selling book released in Kindle version – Cal Coast News

Daniel Blackburn's best-selling book, "Human Harvest: The Sacramento Murder Story," has been republished in ebook (Kindle) version by Garrett County Press of New Orleans.

Blackburn is co-founder and senior correspondent for CalCoastNews.

"Human Harvest" tells the story of Dorothea Montalvo Puente, whose residential home became the epicenter of the Capital City's most infamous horror story, through the unique perspective of the reporter who knew her best.

The book was a Book-of-the-Month selection upon its publication in hardcover and paperback, and has been updated periodically to encompass the long-running epilogue to her murder conviction.

Puente's conversations with Blackburn immediately after her arrest, and following her trial, help shed light on her homicidal actions. She went to her grave in March 2011 without ever admitting guilt.

The landlady specialized in providing room and board for Social Security recipients, nine of whom mysteriously disappeared. Bodies of seven were eventually found buried in the small, well-manicured yard of her downtown Victorian home.

"These were my friends," she told Blackburn. "I would never have hurt them."

Puente was eventually convicted of three murders and spent the rest of her life in prison.

Blackburn's Kindle-version book incorporates the convoluted 13-year effort by Congress to correct language in Social Security law which had allowed Puente to kill with near impunity.

The author also details how Puente's attorneys tried aggressively but unsuccessfully to integrate "Human Harvest" into their defense strategy.
