I was given a Kindle Paperwhite at Christmas. It failed to hold a charge for very long. According to the adverts this latest Kindle’s battery is supposed to last for up to eight weeks. I queried this with Amazon and was sent a replacement without any fuss. The latest one has not proved to be any more reliable. I fully charged the battery then left it aside having taken precautions to save power, including turning the wireless off. Three weeks later (not having read anything on it) there was only a thin line left showing on the battery scale. Am I being unrealistic in expecting better?
Like car manufacturer's fuel consumption figures, Amazon's battery life claims are based on idealised usage patterns that may not necessarily reflect real world conditions, but I would have expected it to show more signs of life after three weeks of inactivity. However, it is not unusual for battery consumption to be temporarily higher on new Kindles, especially if you have a large number of books. This is due to indexing, and you may find that subsequent charges last longer. It can also get stuck indexing a corrupt book file. One way to test this is to search for a non existent word (enter some random characters into the Search box); it will tell you that it can't be found, along with a list of the books that are being indexed. Repeat this a day or so later and if you find the same book is still listed remove it from the Kindle and see if that makes a difference to battery performance.
The report claims that Amazon has plans to launch three new Kindle tablets including a new Kindle Fire variant that will replace the entry level Kindle Fire priced at $ 159, the Kindle Fire HD 7.0-inch successor which would replace the current Kindle Fire HD 7.0-inch and a revamped Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch tablet that replaces the existing 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD.
If the rumours are true, Amazon’s next generation Kindle Fire tablets would be up against the likes of the Google Nexus 2 and Apple iPad mini 2 which are also expected to launched later this year.
While Google is expected to launch its next generation Nexus tablet in August with the latest Android version running, Apple is said to be gearing up to launch its iPad mini 2 in the holiday season.
Earlier, we reported about Amazon’s plan to launch next generation Kindle Fire tablets with new design and better screens. Amazon has plans to upgrade its 7.0-inch Kindle Fire entry-level tablet with a higher resolution screen of 1280×800 pixels. The new models of the Kindle Fire tablets are expected to be lighter and could feature a more angular design and the corners of the tablets would not be rounded as well.
Recently, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) cut the price of its Kindle Fire HD in the U.S. and the U.K. The 7-inch slate reader got a 15 percent price cut. The 160 GB reader is now priced $ 169 in the United States.

This may be Amazon's response to the price cut for Barnes & Noble's (NYSE:BKS) Nook HD. Amazon and Barnes & Noble both referred to these price reductions as a "limited time offer." Amazon was trying to stay competitive with Barnes & Noble, but the Nook is still cheaper than the Kindle Fire after the price reductions.
Barnes & Noble decided to cut prices because it wanted to clear out its Nook HD and Nook HD+ supply because the company is going to license the brand to third party manufacturers. Instead, Barnes & Nobles is going to focus on developing e-readers, such as the Simple Touch.
Amazon is not focusing on unloading merchandise though. It is using a price cut to put pressure on its competitor. Amazon has used this tactic before. In 2009, when the Nook came out, Amazon cut prices on its second-generation Kindle.

Kindle Fire HD cheaper than ever in the UK
It has been a good week if you’re in the market for an affordable Android tablet.
First Barnes & Noble slashed the cost of its Nook HD readers in the UK and now, as the week comes to a close, Amazon is at it too.
Not to be outdone by its fellow American bookseller, Amazon has slashed the price of the 16GB, 7-inch Kindle Fire HD by £20.
The ad-supported version will now cost only £139, down from £159, while the commercial-free iteration is a tenner dearer at £149. Similar deals are also in Europe and the US.
However, the discounts are are limited to the 7-inch tablet, with the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD remains at, by comparison, a rather expensive £229.
Earlier this week, Barnes & Noble cut the price of its base Nook HD tablet to just £99 in the UK as it begins to hand the brand over to third party manufacturers.
While the Amazon price cut could be a direct response to B&N reducing the cost of its Android tablets, it’s also plausible that the retailer is preparing to refresh the device.
The Kindle Fire HD arrived in the UK in October last year, so it would be no surprise to see a newly-updated iteration arrive around the same time this year.
Of course, rumours persist that Amazon is plotting to launch its first smartphone later this year although it’s gone rather quiet on that front just lately.

N.C. A&T has suspended senior quarterback Lewis Kindle from all football-related activities pending the resolution of two criminal charges, the school announced Friday.
At approximately 3:06 a.m. Friday, Kindle was stopped by an A&T campus police officer while driving on East Lindsay Street and attempting to make a left turn onto Sullivan Street.
He was charged with failure to burn headlights from sunset to sunrise and driving while impaired, the school said in a release. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 26.
In 10 games last season, Kindle completed 119 of 214 passes for 1,341 yards with three touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
U.S. U19 BASKETBALL: Seven players scored in double figures as the United States dominated Canada 109-67 on Friday in a quarterfinal at the FIBA U19 men's basketball world championships in Prague, Czech Republic. Duke guard Rasheed Sulaimon had three points and four assists for the U.S., which meets Lithuania today in a semifinal.

In reaction to Barnes and Noble reducing the price of their Nook HD tablet earlier this week, Amazon has now followed suit and reduced the price of their Kindle Fire HD tablet to stay in competition.
Amazon has now dropped their 7 inch Kindle Fire HD tablet down £139 offering UK residents a saving of £20 for the 16 GB version.
In the US Amazon has reduced the price of the same 7 inch Kindle Fire HD tablet than $ 169 saving US residents $ 30 on the previous price. In comparison the Barnes & Noble 7 inch Nook HD tablet is priced at £129 and $ 149 for the 16GB model.
