The 2014 Edition Of Amazon Kindle Review: It’s Brilliant – Gizmodo India

Nothing compares to the feeling you get when you open a fresh book or novel. It cannot be replaced by anything. However, E-readers do come close. It is kind of exciting to read a new book on an electronic reader that gives you a paper like feel. Well, look at it this way, you are able to read your favourite books, but without wasting any paper and at a lesser price. Plus then there is the case of storage. You do not require a book shelf or rack to store E-books. Your handy E-reader can do that for you.

We got to spend a lot of time with the new 2014 edition of Amazon Kindle and as the days went by, we found ourselves to be in love with it. So much that we forgot all about paper and hard binds. Here is our take of this wonderful E-reader.

Design
When it comes to looks the 2014 version of Amazon Kindle has nothing great to give. It is wrapped in rugged and hard black plastic enclosure. There are no physical buttons on the Kindle, except the power button at the button. Next to it is the USB charging cum data port.

All the physical buttons are gone now and what you get is a brilliant 6-inch touch screen on the Amazon Kindle 2014. Which we adore, by the way. The black and white screen gives you a sense and feel of reading an actual paper novel.

Performance
The resolution of the Kindle 2014 is lesser of that found on Kindle Paperwhite. This one supports only 167 PPi, but is not bad at all. Over that, the screen brightness cannot be increased or decreased.

Okay, so we have got all the not-so-great points out of the way, on to the good stuff then.

Amazon Kindle 2014 has 4GB memory that can hold thousands and thousands of E-books. Also, users can store books on Amazon cloud for free. Amazon Kindle 2014 is the Wi-Fi only version of Kindle and we were able to set it up in a matter of few minutes.

A lot of new features has been added to this nifty little reader. One can easily setup an account with Amazon and download books in less than 60 seconds. X-ray feature is live on this one as well, which lets users know about the important parts of the book. It is basically a timeline of things that happen in the novel.

Changing fonts and alphabet size is child’s play. Couple of clicks and you can choose from 5-6 font types, spacing and font size. Users can tap and check for the word in the dictionary that pops up on the screen. One can also do a live Wiki search for the same. Social sharing has also become easier. The users just need to hold and highlight a line or a para from the book and can share it on their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Moving on to the battery life. The kindle can last for weeks on a single charge. We read couple of E-books (with the Wi-Fi on) and it lasted for 2 weeks before we had to charge it again. To charge the device, one has to do with a laptop or PC as Amazon does not provide a charger in the box. Users only get a data cable.

Verdict
As this is the basic version of the kindle so one would see Amazon adds running on the home screen. Here, all the E-books are placed along with Amazon’s suggestions. We were able to read books easily as the fonts are crisp and nice. But, you do feel the need for a backlit display when you want to read at night and don’t want to disturb your spouse by keeping the room lights on.

Overall, the experience with the Amazon Kindle 2014 was superb. The array of books they provide is great. One can download books in a jiffy and the device is very portable. Lot of books can be downloaded for free as well. Moreover, Amazon is asking for just Rs 5,999 for this neat E-book reader. A must-buy for book lovers.
