Would This Move From Amazon.com Get You to Buy a Fire Phone or Kindle Fire? – Motley Fool

The Fire phone was a flop. Source: Amazon.

Even after the full-on flop of the Fire Phone, Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) CEO Jeff Bezos remains dedicated to increasing his company’s relevance in the growing mobile economy. Amazon’s most recently reported plan could convince people their next tablet should be a Kindle Fire or even that the next Fire Phone — should it come along — is at least worth taking a look at. TechCrunch reports that Amazon is working on a program that allows customers to download premium paid apps and buy in-app add-ons for a single fee. The program is being called Unlocked, according to TechCrunch — which said it got the skinny via a leaked internal presentation — and it operates similarly to Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service… but, you know, for apps.

Not just for Amazon devices
Unlocked wouldn’t be just for Amazon devices. Amazon’s app store is available for any Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL  ) (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) Android device, but users must disable certain security settings to install it. When Amazon tried to sneak its app store into its flagship app, Google delisted it, so users now must install the app store from the web.

Clearly, Google doesn’t want the competition. Nor should it. Last year, the company generated approximately $ 10 billion in gross revenue from its app store, so it’s a big market that it’s cornered.

But Unlocked may give users the incentive they need to go out of their way and install the Amazon app store. And those would be valuable customers for Google — customers willing to pay for apps, at least in some form.

Amazon has attempted to draw customers to its app store before by giving away apps that typically charge a price, attracting customers interested in free apps. But Unlocked would attract a different brand of customer. Customers who typically spend a lot on paid apps or in-app purchases would be drawn to the flat fee of Unlocked. That’s bad news for Google, because those customers make up the majority of its app store revenue.

Unlocked would reportedly be limited in its selection of apps, and participation would be at the developer’s discretion. An app may be free one day and a few bucks the next, and an app that had free in-app purchases may charge for them again in the future. That could lead to some frustrated customers if Amazon doesn’t manage its partner relationships.

Kick-starting Fire Phone sales
While Kindle Fire sales continue to do well according to the brief glimpses Amazon provides to us, the Fire Phone was undoubtedly a flop. Amazon was forced to write down $ 170 million worth of Fire Phone inventory in its third quarter, resulting in a huge earnings miss, and a dent to its stock price.

With tablets, Amazon understands that the device is primarily about media consumption. In that sense, coupling a year of Amazon Prime makes perfect sense. And while users are consuming an increasing amount of video content on their smartphones, they’re still largely about apps and games.

About one-third of total time spent on smartphones in the U.S. is with games, and that’s exactly what Unlocked reportedly focuses on. While it will have some non-game apps, the headlining partners reportedly include Sega America, and smaller game maker UsTwo. Coupling a free year of Unlocked with a phone would make it instantly more attractive.

Only Amazon
Only Amazon could offer the kind of potentially disruptive deal Unlocked seems to be. Unlocked will reportedly require users to download Amazon’s flagship app in order to work, and some nice branding pops up every time a user would have otherwise had to purchase something from the app store. It seems Amazon sees potential for the app store to drive incremental sales on its retail website. That’s exactly the strategy behind Prime, as well, which has worked wonderfully, according to management.

Whether Unlocked ever sees the light of day, and whether it can persuade users to switch to Amazon hardware — or at least install its app store — remains to be seen. But Amazon appears dead-set on strengthening its position in mobile, which is key if it doesn’t want to become just another app.

This $ 19 trillion industry could destroy the Internet
One bleeding-edge technology is about to put the World Wide Web to bed. And if you act right away, it could make you wildly rich. Experts are calling it the single largest business opportunity in the history of capitalism… The Economist is calling it “transformative”… But you’ll probably just call it “how I made my millions.” Don’t be too late to the party — click here for one stock to own when the Web goes dark.

Share On FacebookFree Newsletter

Kindle Voyage

Amazon has launched their latest and the best Kindle in India – The Kindle Voyage, which promises better hardware and better screen on the uber popular e-reader. However, it is priced quite steeply at Rs. 16,499 which might appeal to only the most voracious of readers in India.

Highlight of the new Kindle Voyage (the 3G version) is that it provides with Free 3G connectivity, so can download and sync your books anywhere and everywhere even if you do not have a Wi-Fi. The best part is you do not have to subscribe to any telecom service to get the 3G – it is in-built. Neither do you need to have a 3G Sim card, nor do you have to worry about connectivity. This is probably the biggest advantage of Kindle Voyage over previous generation Kindles.

So How is Kindle Voyage different?

The new Kindle voyage 6-inch display comes with Carta e-paper technology and adaptive front light that adjusts automatically. It has a pixel density of 300 ppi with optimized font technology and 16-level gray scale. The storage capacity remains at 4GB which is easily enough to store thousands of books on it.

Even the Battery capacity has been increased – the new voyage battery will last upto 6 weeks or one and half month on single recharge and the battery fully charges in 3 hours through USB cable.

Kindle Voyage supports nearly all document formats including Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI and PRC natively. It also supports HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP formats through conversion.

Here is how Kindle Voyager compares with other Kindle Versions

Kindle Voyage 3G

While the Kindle Voyage comes in 2 versions – The WiFi version and the WiFi+3G version. The latter only differs because it offers free 3G connectivity to the users. However, the 3G version is priced at Rs. 20,499, around Rs. 4000 higher than WiFi version.

Like we said previously, the user does not need to have 3G subscription, the Voyage 3G version has 3G connectivity inbuilt. The 3G connectivity is available only in some parts of India. Here is the map which shows where Kindle Voyage 3G will have connectivity.

Kindle Voyage 3G connectivity

Most of the Southern, Central and Northern India is available through either 3G or 2G connectivity, which users can use to download the books. In the eastern parts only West Bengal has the connectivity. So, if you live in parts where there is no 3G or 2G connectivity, it is better to buy the base WiFi version.

Amazon Kindle Voyage Express Review: They managed to better something that … – Financial Express

kidle voyage, kindle voyage price, kindle voyage review, kindle voyage india, amazon, amazon kindle voyage, technology newsThe Amazon Kindle Voyage is now the best e-reader in town. (Source: Nandagopal Rajan)

E-readers have come and gone, but the Amazon Kindle is still the world's favourite digital book for one reason: it is the best e-book reader you can buy. This is where it gets tricky for the company to think of a new version. How do you improve something that is already so good?

Amazon Kindle Voyage

At first look the Kindle Voyage is slightly different from its predecessors. The rear panel has a diamond cut finish that makes the edges thinner and easier to grip. Amazon calls it the Origami cover. The power button has moved from under the screen to the rear and is easier to get to when you are holding the device in reading mode. But the biggest change are the two lines and dots that flank the screen. Click on the dots on either side and you will be taken a page back. Click on the lines and you will mode a page up. Both clicks give you a haptic vibration, feedback to tell you that your command has been understood.

It is thinner now.

The back cover has changed too.

What is good?

I have been a very satisfied Kindle Paperwhite user for the past year or so. This is why the addition of the page turn side panels has come as a such big joy for me. It is much more easier and natural to just squeeze a bit more where you are holding the e-reader. The page turns experience is also faster and better.

Pagepress is just a squeeze on the sides.

The front light on the screen now has a automatic adjust option. So you hold a Kindle Voyage and walk in and out of your house and your eyes wouldn't have anything to adjust to. The screen will do that for you. The change is subtle and don't expect the device to flicker to a brighter screen because you switched off the light. And that is the whole beauty of it.

The Amazon Kindle device I reviewed — a few months before Amazon started selling the e-readers in India — could connect to the Internet in India even though it was shipped from the US. Amazon called its global connectivity option Whispernet and it still works like a dream, though now with 3G. It worked out of the box and I did not have to do anything, not even log into my Wi-Fi to set up the Voyage. And it is fast. I downloaded a Devdutt Patnaik book in under a minute even though there was just one-bar connectivity at home. For the Kindle power user, this is a real cutting edge.

The Kindle Voyage comes with free 3G out of the box.

The screen quality has also improved. While it is hard to figure this out when you are reading text, it is obvious when you are on a book cover and there are images to be shown.

What is not that good?

The Kindle Voyage is almost the perfect e-reader. The only issue I had was that the page turns could be a bit faster that you would want it to. So instead of one, you might turn two pages at times. The good thing is that you can select the amount of pressure you want to apply for the Pagepress.

Should you buy?

You can adjust the pressure on Pagepress.

Of course, if you don't have a e-reader yet. But buy the Voyage only if you are one of those who wants to read on the go and wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for that connectivity. Others can look at the more affordable options which are still great e-readers. For me, the changes are good enough to start thinking about an upgrade though my Kindle Paperwhite is just a year old.
