Amazon said Monday it is no longer requiring authors to have special codes to participate in Write On, a social network of sorts that allows writers to interact with readers by soliciting feedback on plots or asking for help with grammar or research. So far, the network, which launched in October, is being described as a ghost town because of the registration requirements. Presumably, that will change as it opens up, but it will still have to compete with companies offering similar services including Toronto-based Wattpad, which has raised $ 67 million in capital, and Smashwords, a Los Gatos, Calif.-based self-publishing platform.
