Parents throw the book at teen for Kindle swindle - Boston Herald

Dear OMG,

My parents gave me a Kindle, which is linked to their Amazon account (they said so they could check up on what I was reading). I guess they didn't realize it was also linked to their credit card, and I racked up a couple hundred dollars' worth of game and movie purchases. They were really mad. My parents reported it as fraudulent activity to Amazon, and got their money back, though. But now they're saying I have to pay them back, too, and get a job. They got their money back, so I don't understand. How can I explain to them so they will?

Dear E-reader,

You can't explain this to your parents in a way they will understand, because they are right and you are wrong. Regardless of the fact that Amazon reimbursed them, you violated their trust, and they are choosing to punish you by asking you to work to repay that money. They could have chosen something much worse, so you should really be thankful. Start practicing your "Do you want fries with that?" speech.

Dear OMG,

I live in a doorman building and we get all our concierges from one company. The building manager fired the company that was providing our concierges — who were wonderful — and replaced them with a new company that I've found to be very inadequate. I was close to the old staff and I don't feel comfortable giving the new staff Christmas gifts, especially since they're so incompetent sometimes. Do I still have to?

Dear High-Rise,

It's not the new team's fault that the old team was fired — that's an issue to take up with your building manager, and it's possible they are to blame for the new doormen's lack of training as well. Since you don't know them well, it doesn't seem like you need to gift them extravagantly, but even a $ 10 gift card to Dunkin' will curry you favor over the coming year — it's definitely worth it.
