iPad Mini vs. Kindle Fire HDX vs. Nvidia Shield – Apple Tablets War Against … – Neurogadget

If you're looking to buy a great tablet as your companion, then you will like today's comparison between the three top smaller tablets on the market: the Nvidia Shield Tablet, Apple's iPad Mini and Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX. Let's look at what these devices have to offer.

Display

The Nvidia Shield Tablet comes with the largest display of the three, measuring 8 inches. This display can render a pixel resolution of 1920×1200, making the pixel density of 283 pixels per inch. A small issue was noticed with this tablet however, people saying that the colors are a bit off, but that doesn't mean the image quality is obliviated.

Apple's tablet, the iPad Mini, is equipped with a 7.9 inches display that can render a pixel resolution of 2048×1536, which is better than its counterparts. The pixel density is impressive too, at 326 ppi.

Let's go on to Amazon's device, that packs the smallest display out of the three: the 7 inch LCD screen has a pixel resolution of 1920×1200, same as the Shield Tablet, and shows off a 323 pixels per inch pixel density.

Processor

In the processor department, we have to admit that it's pretty hard to compare the three tablets, seeing how they all come with such different technology. But we're going to list here what each device packs and you can decide on your own which one suits your needs the best.

The Nvidia Shield Tablet is said to be a device which its only purpose was to show off what the company's somewhat new processor can do for a great user experience. The processor we're talking about is the Nvidia Tegra K1 one, the 32-bit version being backed up by 2 GB of RAM. The newer processor they have on the market, the Tegra X1 hasn't yet been seen on a tablet.

The iPad Mini shows off a dual-core processor with Apple's A7 chip, 64-bit version. The device is also equipped with a very good GPU model: PowerVR G6430.

As for the Kindle Fire HDX, we're seeing a Snapdragon 800 chipset that will be good enough for the device to have high speed performance, but the chipset is quite an old model and some improvements would have been nice in this department. It is backed up by 2 GB of RAM.

Internal Memory

All of them offer different storage choices.

Apple's iPad Mini: 16 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB

Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX: 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB

Nvidia's Shield Tablet:  16 GB and 32 GB (microSD card slot)

Software

Let's start out with Amazon's tablet. The Kindle Fire HDX runs a modified version of Android in which Amazon included all of its own features as cloud storage via Amazon and the option of connecting the tablet to any of the Fire TV devices to share screens. Another thing we want to add here is that Amazon has its own App Store that hasn't been that greatly embraced by the public. The store does have an impressive number of apps available, but the newest or 'trending' applications won't be available when they're in vogue.

Next we have the Shield Tablet that also holds Android as an operating system, this one being the clean Google version. This means that you will have Google Play Store on your gadget, store that is extremely popular. Nvidia is going to release a streaming service that helps you stream computer games which only requires you to have a controller.

Apple's iPad Mini is running on iOS 8, but we're sure that the company will update the tablet to run on iOS 9.

Price

First we have the Nvidia Shield Tablet that starts retailing at 299 US dollars for the 16 GB version. If you want to opt for the 32 GB version, you will pay an extra 100 dollars that will include LTE connectivity as well.

Apple's iPad Mini is, as you'd expect, the pricier tablet out of the three, the 16 GB version of the gadget being priced at 399 US dollars. For a storage boost (to 64 GB or 128 GB) you will pay either 100 or 200 more dollars.

Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX is the cheapest out of the bunch, the tablet with 16 GB of internal memory retailing at 179 US dollars. For a storage boost it's only 20 dollars each boost. However, we have to add that the 179 dollars version will come with ads, and removing them will cost an extra 15 dollars.

Kindle in China can be quite long: face domestic rival criminal gangs – Sina

persist Booksellers not book domestic rivals suffered emperor to abdicate

Kindle in China also quite how long

Beijing Daily News (reporter Lu Zheng Yang Rui) Kindle recently jointly lifestyle magazine “ideal home” start “Reading is the charm” campaign, intended for rope More popularity. Although the Kindle in the domestic market influence should not be underestimated, but the face of increasingly perfect function smart phones, tablet PCs and other mobile terminal as well as the impact of domestic electric paper book, insists not only sell books Kindle book can hold in China how long?

It is understood that when the Kindle into China two years ago, a time when the domestic electronic paper book sales greatly reduced, a large number of electronic paper book business out of the market, which gives access to development opportunities Kindle, electronic paper book sales rose. Vice President of China market Amazon Kindle [microblogging] Yuhong to Beijing Daily reporter said, “Because now facing stiff competition, can not disclose specific sales, but preliminary estimates, Kindle sales in 2014 is at least twice and in 2013 compared to growth. ”

Although Kindle sales is acceptable, but it is worth noting that Yuhong also referred to the “harsh competition.” With the gradual diversification of technology products, including smart phones, tablet PCs, including a plurality of mobile terminals not only be able to read e-books, as well as games and other functions, this function for only a single reading of electronic paper book will undoubtedly have an impact. In addition, now also been found in other domestic electronic paper products, such as palm reading science and technology earlier this month introduced a hardware product iReader electronic paper book, only three days of pre-sold 630,000 units, while other companies Hanwang also related products, intense competition in the industry.

It is worth noting that, due to the content of the value of the more prominent, the increase their competitiveness, many companies have begun to digital reading force of original content, including palm reading Science and Technology in April this year he pledged to invest 10 billion yuan into the network original literature, but still insist on only Kindle bookstore, does not do original content.

But Yuhong believe that the future market space is still large, “the depth reading of readers, compared to other mobile terminals, Kindle reading experience feel better, and the emergence of other domestic competitors, can help will further expand the market, the final total could have different market segments were cut, it seems to do a beer, a lot of brands, but they are able to do. ”

However, Zhang Yi, deputy director of the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences Center for the Arts opinion, Kindle with its brand influence and a better service experience to occupy a major position in the market, and has formed a content charge mode. But it can not be ignored is that e-book reader is gradually reduced in a niche market, but the market has basically met the needs of the vast majority of the target user, the new user is not much competition in the industry it is difficult to pass the market bigger ʱ?? Kindle by providing a better user experience and content has been formed to maintain the status quo, although payment models, but if you want to continue to expand the scale is still more difficult.

Attempted Kindle Thief Flees On Departing Q Train At Atlantic Avenue Station – Park Slope Stoop (blog)

Suspected Kindle Thief on Q Train

Image via NYPD

A would-be thief had to flee empty-handed after his intended target resisted his multiple attempts to steal his Kindle, say cops, who have released the above cell phone photo of the suspect.

The attempted robber allegedly went after a 32-year-old man who was standing on the Manhattan-bound platform of the B/Q train at around 1:15pm on Thursday, July 30, attempting to grab his Kindle from his hands from behind, according to police. He tried again, this time going for the man's glasses first, causing cuts to the victim's face during the struggle. Eventually, the suspect fled on a Q train.

The suspect is described as a 40-year-old black man, about six-feet-two-inches tall and 220 pounds.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577.

Reading Books Instead of Kindles Can Improve Your Memory, Concentration and … – Mic

Old fashioned books have picked up a lot of haters in recent years. Environmentalists have decried them as ” mediums, while average readers often complain they can be weighty, cumbersome and don’t travel well. Some have argued it’s time to retire the 15th century technology and embrace Kindles and other electronic reading devices.

Science, however, offers another view. According to numerous studies and expert opinion, reading physical books can improve memory, concentration and may even make you physically more attractive.

Memory: According to at least one study, conducted by researchers at Stavanger University in Norway, people who read actual books are significantly better at remembering what they read as opposed to people who read books on a Kindle and other e-readers.

“The haptic and tactile feedback of a Kindle does not provide the same support for mental reconstruction of a story as a print pocket book does,” lead researcher Anne Mangen concluded.

Part of the reason also has to do with the unique interaction required in reading a real book. Mangen further speculated that “the fixity of a text on paper, and this very gradual unfolding of paper as you progress through a story is some kind of sensory offload, supporting the visual sense of progress when you’re reading.”

Additional studies indicate the not being able to flip back and forth between pages or easily make notes further erodes the ability to commit the information to the brain’s long-term memory.

Source: Mic/Getty Images

Concentration: Others have argued e-reading has reduced our ability to understand and concentrate on the text in front of us. The hypothesis was backed up by a survey conducted by Naomi Baron, author of Words Onscreen: The Fate of Reading in a Digital World and executive director for American University’s Center for Teaching, Research and Learning. Baron told Mic, after speaking with 400 students between the ages of 18 and 26 in the United States, Germany, Japan, India and Slovakia, the results were irrefutable.

“If you ask students in this age cohort, where do you best concentrate, in which kind of medium… depending on the country, between 92 and 94% of students said, ‘I concentrate best when I read print,’” Baron said. Baron also said that roughly the same percentage would prefer using real books if price were not a factor.

Baron said the problem when reading with so many potential distractions could be encapsulated in an analogy: “If I put a bowl of potato chips in front of you and said ‘I’ll be back in an hour, don’t ruin your appetite,’ how many potato chips are left?”

Reading is sexy and makes you a more empathetic person. As anyone who has seen the famous Hot Dudes Reading Instagram account will know, there are few things as sexy as reading an old fashioned book. A casual scroll through its entries reveals nary a Kindle in sight. For further proof, looking through Craigslist’s missed connections reveals a number of examples of the passion reading on real books can inspire.

Source: Craigslist

Other studies meanwhile have shown people who read physical books were more empathetic, and those who read an unpleasant story on an iPad were less moved than those who read it on an old fashioned paper book.

So don’t burn the books just yet. The good news is that despite the alluring convenience and cost of electronic reading devices, books have held their ground. Since a highpoint in 2012, e-reader sales fell off sharply. In 2014, publishers Penguin Random House and Simon and Schuster bled 8.8% of total profits largely due to disappointing sales in readers. Sales for Barnes and Noble’s Nook reader also slumped that same year.

“It’s a more personal connection when I read a book over the electronic,” Angela Groth, the director of the Ardsley, New York Public Library, told Mic, adding grim predictions of

Fantagraphics, Comixology Expand Deal to the Kindle Store – Publishers Weekly

Fantagraphics has renewed and expanded its digital distribution agreement for the Comixology platform, and starting today some 300 titles will be available on Amazon's Kindle Store. The offerings include classics such as Love & Rockets by Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez, I Killed Adolf Hitler by Jason, How to Be Happy by Eleanor Davis, TEOTFW by Chuck Forsman and Ed Piskor's Hip Hop Family Tree.

Fantagraphics, long home to some of the most acclaimed literary cartoonists, joins a small group of publishers— Marvel, Archie and IDW—who have full catalogs available on the Kindle store, but more will be added soon, according to Comixology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger.

Fantagraphics associate publisher Eric Reynolds sees adding their line to the Kindle store as a way to increase availability to ebook readers. "Comixology has done a great job of launching digital comics, especially to readers who purchase single issues, but we're hoping to penetrate deeper into the book buying audience that Kindle reaches," he told PW.

"Between what Comixology brings to the table in terms of tech and what Amazon brings in terms of getting into the hands of people who consume books on Kindles, there's a lot of potential there," says Reynolds.

Steinberger confirms that the Kindle’s primary audience–prose readers–is more graphic novel focused, but since Amazon’s acquisition of Comixology last year, they’ve been expanding the kind of comics available on the platform—Fantagraphics’s deep catalog being a prime example. “As we continue to bring in more comics to Kindle and more graphic novels to Comixology, there are opportunities for great growth on both sides,” he says.

Fantagraphics resisted going digital longer than many publishers, and is still print focused, but joining Comixology, and other digital platforms such as Google Play and the Sequential app, have created a reliable income stream according to Reynolds. As with most publishers, the bestsellers are similar in both print and digital. "Love and Rockets and Hip Hop Family Tree have done really well in both, as have some other creators who have been around the direct market for a while," he said. "Digital sales continues to grow for us in every quarter, and more rapidly all the time.”

Fantagraphics titles are already available via the Comixology platform, including downloadable bundles of work by The Hernandez Brothers and Jason. The Kindle store cannot currently handle bundles but as with Comixology, new releases are available the same day as print.

Other Fantagraphics titles now available on the Kindle store include Hate (Peter Bagge), Dungeon Quest (Joe Daly) and Violenzia (Richard Sala).
