Kobo Arc 10HD Review - ebooks that aren't tainted by Amazon - Shiny Shiny

Everyone knows that Amazon are the current kings of ebooks, and it’s easy to see why – they’ve developed an expansive eco-system of millions of available books, along with some great devices to read them on. But there is a problem: Amazon aren’t the most… ethical company, right? They don’t pay their taxes, and have been accused of using their clout to bully an already struggling publishing industry. So what if you want to read without the hassle of paper – but don’t want to give them your cash? Kobo has long been the nearest competitor – and with the release of the Kobo Arc 10HD, we see them challenge Amazon’s big beast, the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ directly. But how does it stack up?

kobo.png

The Hardware

The Arc 10HD has a large 10″ screen – and it’s oriented to be essentially super widescreen – in a 16:10 ratio (normal widescreen TV is 16:9). It works either as a portrait or landscape device – but given the placing of the camera and the fact you’re supposed to use it to read books, it’s clearly designed mostly for landscape usage. The screen itself runs at a comparatively massive 2560×1600 with 300ppi – and can play back 1080p HD videos as a result. The only bad thing about the screen – and maybe I’m just mad in thinking this – is that it seems a little… not quite as bright as the Macbook I am writing this on, even when the brightness control is maxed out. Though your eyes will quickly adjust to this.

There’s a touchscreen that can take up to ten fingers at once, and under the hood it’s towards the top-end of Android tablets: A 1.8ghz quad-core Tegra processor, with 2GB of RAM and with 16GB of on-board storage.

Connectivity looks good too: There’s wifi (with 2×2 MIMO!), bluetooth 4.0, as well as mini HDMI out (for plugging into your TV) and a Micro USB socket (for charging it up). Kobo claim to be able to get 9.5 hours of battery life out of it if you’re continuously reading – with the wifi off.

But what does it feel like? I found it surprisingly weighty – not to the point of struggling… but it simply feels heavier than it looks. Similarly it’s slightly thicker than you might expect – at 9.9mm. Not that this is unbearable – I don’t want to accidentally start a thing where we criticise tablets that aren’t “size zero”. It feels solid to use – though there isn’t really much to say. It’s a black rectangle with a screen on it – what do you expect?!

Reading

What you’ll notice when you first switch on the Kobo is the Kobo app/store that sits on the tablet’s desktop, as one of the screens. Once you’re logged in with your Kobo account you can scroll through a list of your books and magazines (they’re arranged like a Pinterest page).

Magazines are handled a bit like big PDFs – each page is essentially a large image file – so it’s much easier to read in portrait mode than landscape.

Books meanwhile are handled as text – so you can choose to read in either mode – you can even have two columns of words displayed side by side (just like a book!). Scrolling through is nice and quick – though page transitions are by default animated with a modern swish rather than an old-fashioned page-turn. You can change this in settings though – along with choose to turn pages using the physical volume buttons on the side of the device… which is great if you’re a lazy reader.

What’s quite cool is that Kobo have augmented the reading experience and made it social. Like Amazon have done with Kindle, it’s possible to highlight bits of text and write notes and share to Facebook – but where Kobo seems to have the edge is that you can also apply different coloured highlighting, which is great if you’re studying a book.

Similarly – if you see a pink speech bubble subtly appear at the side of a page, you can read comments from other readers. What’s also impressive is that some books have loads of extra details – touch the diamond icon at the bottom or press on the underlined text and it’ll give you a guide to different historical references and the like – citing Wikipedia. On one example I found, on a reference in a novel to “Margaret of Anjou”, it even recommended other books about her.

Perhaps the best feature though is Reading Mode. The trouble with reading on a tablet, as opposed to a dead tree is that there are just so many distractions. Why would I want to read a book old book when I can rot my mind checking those Facebook notifications or taking my turn on Scrabble? Reading mode gets rid of all of that by switching off wifi, bluetooth, notifications and everything else that could possibly take you out of Hogwarts/Nania/Derrida’s brain. This can be triggered either automatically when you go to read a book, or manually with a simple swipe down of the menu at the top of the screen.

Finally, a note on the Kobo store. Whilst Amazon have always had the largest catalogue of ebooks to download, unless you’re after something really obscure, it probably won’t affect you. I tried searching the Kobo store for all of my most recent Kindle purchases – and it had everything apart from this, which let’s face it, is so obscure if it were made 10 years ago it’d be made from photocopies stapled together and sold at a carboot sale.

Other Software

The Kobo runs Android 4.2 Jellybean – and thanks to the powerful processor runs it nice and smoothly. Apart from the Kobo-specific software, it seems to let the rest of the tablet run regular Android unimpeded – so your apps still come from Google Play, and there’s still a tight integration with Google services. You can even buy books from Google’s store, if you like.

I tried giving the tablet a bit of a stress-test by downloading some of the flashiest Android games to the device. It seems to cope absolutely fine with everything I’ve tried – including the latest FIFA. But you’re going to use this for reading clever books, not wasting time on games, right?

The Verdict

So is the Kobo Arc 10HD a good purchase? It certainly could be. At £300 it’s at least £100 cheaper than an iPad, and you’ll still get a powerful 10″ Android tablet, even before you consider reading anything on it.

My only reservation is something that technology can’t really solve. And that’s the test of whether you’d get it out on the night bus. I’ve got a 7″ e-ink Kindle, which whilst a cool gadget isn’t particularly attractive to teenage muggers because all I can do on it is read books – I’d feel much more of a target pulling a massive 10″ glowing screen out of my bag. But this is just me being paranoid.

On the merits of the tablet itself, the Kobo is a great device – and a cracking alternative to the Kindle. You won’t be disappointed with the Kobo.

Spuul's Indian Netflix Service Comes to Kindle Fire - The Next Web

Amazon Prepping Higher-Res Kindle Paperwhite - NewsFactor Network

Amazon is upping its game for e-readers. According to news reports, the giant retailer is coming out with a new Kindle Paperwhite after the holidays that will feature a higher-resolution e-ink screen.

The new model, codenamed Ice Wine and lighter than any previous Amazon e-reader, is expected to be released in second quarter of next year. It will sport a 300 ppi matte glass screen that is flush with the front edge. Given the standard six-inch screen size of a Kindle, that could result in a screen resolution of about 1440 x 1080. The current Paperwhite model features a 212 ppi screen, lower than the 265 ppi display on a competing Kobo Aura HD e-reader.

In addition to the high-res screen, the new Paperwhite will also reportedly come with a new, customized typography that improves on the reading experience. Font readability, of course, is a key metric of an e-reader, and the Kindle has received complaints on that front. An ambient light sensor is expected to automatically detect available light and dim or brighten the screen to compensate.

Squeezable Buttons

There are also reports that the new Kindle may feature squeezable buttons on the side that give tactile feedback when pressed, and that can be used to turn pages. The rear casing is said to be closer to the angular design of the Kindle Fire HDX tablets.

Last week, Time Magazine rated the top five e-readers, and chose the current Amazon Kindle Paperwhite as #1, followed in order by the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, the Kobo Glo, the Barnes & Noble NOOK Simple Touch Reader, and the Kobo Aura HD.

But, while reading e-books has become a common activity, there is a question about how long e-readers can survive when tablets can also act as e-readers, and much more, at prices under $ 200 for a Kindle Fire or about $ 250 for a Nexus 7, compared to $ 119 for Amazon's bestselling Kindle e-reader.

E-Reader Sales

In August, E Ink Holdings, which makes the screens for most e-readers, announced that its quarterly earnings and sales were down 46 percent year-over-year, resulting in a net loss of $ 33.6 million. It also predicted that e-reader sales will essentially remain flat for this year.

Industry research firm IDC has projected that e-reader sales will fall from their high of $ 26.4 million in 2011 to $ 11.7 million in 2017. According to IDC, Amazon intends to continue its upgrades for the Paperwhite so as to retain that core of customers who are most interested in a high-quality e-reading experience. That market, of course, also contains the most voracious consumers of e-books.

Amazon's content sales is its real revenue stream, and the company is moving forward with various incentives to encourage a flow of e-books to loyal customers. In September, for instance, it announced MatchBook, a program that allows customers who have ever purchased a physical book from Amazon, to download a discounted or even free e-book version.

Did iTunes and Kindle ruin Christmas? - MarketWatch

You know your uncle loves historical fiction and your cousin is crazy about sci-fi films; your sister's favorite musical artist is no great mystery, and your boyfriend spends every spare moment playing video games. Buying thoughtful gifts for everyone on your list should be a snap. But is it?

There are no books, movies, albums or games worth wrapping up, it seems, when everyone you know consumes all their media on an Apple /quotes/zigman/68270/delayed/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL +2.35%   iPad or one of Amazon's /quotes/zigman/63011/delayed/quotes/nls/amzn AMZN +1.40%   Kindle e-readers. Which is why instead of giving the gift of books, music, and movies, many have no choice but to give gift cards. In fact, more than eight in 10 shoppers intend to give these flimsy bits of plastic as gifts this holiday season, according to the National Retail Foundation's holiday spending survey, each spending an average of $ 163 — an all-time high.

The good news for givers who decide to go the gift-card route: Six in 10 of those surveyed by the NRF put gift cards at the top of their wish list. And buying them is certainly easy. You can buy printable, e-mail-deliverable, or digital gift cards everywhere from Amazon to Facebook to iTunes. It's one more reason that sitting behind a laptop has, for some, replaced the traditional trip to the bookstore, music retailer or department store before Christmas and Hanukkah.

ALSO SEE: 10 things department stores won't tell you

Still, this shift to online purchasing hasn't yet eliminated the holiday rush to brick-and-mortar stores, says Patricia Norins, a retail expert and spokesperson for Small Business Saturday. This year, the average family plans to spend $ 646 on gifts for the holiday season, according to a recent study from Accenture, an 11% increase from holiday spending in 2012 and four times as much as will be spend on gift cards. "At some point, if you're only giving and getting gift cards, you might as well write each other a check," Norins says.

What's more, "a large part of the holiday season still constitutes receiving and giving actual gifts. That's part of the tradition," Norins says. Others agree. Consumers still want the experience of unwrapping a gift, because it is a public display and creates a personal connection, says Greg Girard, program director of IDC retail insights. And Debra Gold, president strategic marketing and public relations firm Gold & Co., likens the process to sending a birthday card or a wedding invitation in print instead of in an email. "When the message really matters, it's paper," she says. "You choose the gift yourself. It's not impersonal." That's why digital methods of buying and receiving gifts may complement, but won't replace, a more traditional presentation, Girard says.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet video review collection - Phones Review

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet video review collection

Manufacturers of mobile products normally refresh their range of devices on an annual basis but that's not to say that the older hardware is no good anymore just because a new version has come out, and with that in mind today we have the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet in a video review collection.

The device may be over a year old in some regions but the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is still available and a worthy device and could be ideal Christmas gift for someone or even for yourself. Below we have embedded a number of videos that are reviewing the device.

It has been available for a while now and is currently priced at £179/$ 229 for the 16GB version and the first video we have for you is almost 8 minutes long. The device has modest but likeable styling and the matte finish of the rear is liked and feels nice and sturdy with a slim form factor but it does carry some weight.

The display is found to be clear and detailed with some nice viewing angles that will also be fine when using in bright lighting conditions. We only have a front facing camera and we get a look at the various ports and buttons.

Up next we have a video that is over 21 minutes long that begins running down the specs compared to the smaller 7-inch version. We see a number of apps that have been sideloaded onto the device such as Google Chrome, and we also see the eBook reading experience that the device brings to users before moving onto video content.

We now have another video for you that is over 30 minutes long that starts off by talking how the device fits into the tablet ecosystem, and see it alongside tablets such as the original iPad mini with various features compared.

Various things are looked at such as the web browser and keyboard and how the screen auto-rotates, and things that are like and disliked are discussed. The final video is giving us a quicker look at the device but features a good look on how the screen performs.

Microsoft Surface 2 Growth Outpaces Kindle, Nexus Tablets - Marketing Land

microsoft-surface-featured-2Ad network Chitika has released data showing that Microsoft Surface 2 driven web traffic has grown at a faster rate (on a percentage basis) than tablets from Amazon and Google. However it's growing from a very small base.

Microsoft's initial Surface and Surface Pro tablets were largely failures. Surface 2 (the successor to RT) has received better reviews. It sells for roughly $ 450 and is positioned directly against the traditional iPad. The more powerful Surface 2 Pro, which seeks to be a laptop replacement, starts at $ 899.

For this analysis Chitika looked at millions of North American ad impressions in the month that followed the late-October release of Surface 2. The company found that Surface tablets in the aggregate were now generating 6.4 percent of all non-iPad traffic in North America.

Non iPad traffic distribution

According to the data, Android devices collectively are responsible for just under 92 percent of non-iPad traffic, with Samsung being the OEM leader followed by Amazon. All non-iPad tablets collectively generate just under 20 percent of North American tablet-related traffic. By comparison the iPad controls 80.3 percent of tablet web traffic. That's down slightly from the 81 percent Chitika reported in October.

A flood of inexpensive Android tablets this holiday season will drive additional consumer adoption at the "low end" of the market. There are roughly 150 million smartphones in the US today and, following the holiday, there will probably be more than 100 million tablets.

Hardware tracker Canalys projects that next year "tablets will almost out ship all other PC form factors combined, forming almost 50 percent the total client PC market." It further argued that Microsoft tablets would grow from 2 percent (in 2012) to 5 percent of the global tablet market in 2014.

Windows Phone 8 Gets Updated Kindle App - Gotta Be Mobile

By  | 11/26/2013

Windows Phone users can expect a new update to the platform's Kindle app that comes complete with all the features they'd expect from an native application for Microsoft's mobile platform.

So what can users expect from the update? For starters, Kindle for Windows Phone 8 now supports fast app resume in Windows Phone. This means that Kindle won't need to almost completely restart itself every time a user switches away from the application to answer a message.

Amazon has added better support for Windows's Phone's native Live Tiles too. Starting with this update, users can pin a book to their start screen and actually see the progress they've made without having to open the application. Users who prefer wide live tiles on their Start screen will find that Kindle's for Windows Phone 8 also showcases a book's cover on their Start screen as well.

kindle for windows phone 8

Finally, it seems Amazon has taken this opportunity to address some of the bugs that cropped up since it last updated the Kindle on Windows Phone a year ago. According to the app's update log, Kindle for Windows Phone 8 seems to have stopped causing some books to render blank pages. Amazon has also fixed the dead link that led back to its own online Kindle Store.

Unfortunately, there are still more than a few missing features. iOS and Android users can actually route documents to the Kindle service. That feature remains missing here. Kindle on Windows Phone users don't have access to Amazon's assortment of comics either. Also, there's still no way to highlight text and easily see text you've already highlighted. All told, Kindle for Windows Phone is still miles behind what is available to users on other platforms.

That's a huge problem for Windows Phone users. Microsoft is the only one of the four-largest consumer technology companies to not offer its users a book service directly. Instead, the company counts on Amazon and its Barnes & Noble's Nook platform to supply users with periodicals, books and comics. To date, Nook is only available on Windows RT and Windows 8 devices. Ironically, Nook is run by Nook Media, a joint venture between Barnes & Noble and Microsoft.

Users can download the updated app today, however this update is specifically for devices running Windows Phone 8.

Amazon Kindle eBook Free and More Great Black Friday Deals - Guardian Express

Amazon KindleThere are still announcements made about the different Black Friday Amazon Kindle deals. One of those is a free eBook about the shopping day itself. However, this free eBook for the Amazon Kindle is not the only great Black Friday deal of the week.

The eBook aptly named The Black Friday 2013 Handbook is written just for people looking to snatch up the best deal online. Author Juliana Yates writes about all the tips for shopping on the day, finding the best deal on certain items and ideas for gifts ready for Christmas that people can get from the sales.

Regularly priced at $ 2.99, the electronic book will be available for free until Friday. It is available on Amazon's own website and works on various devices, as well as the new Amazon Kindle Fire and a range of iPads and computers that have the Kindle app.

Amazon regularly offers great deals for Black Friday and even offers a price match against some of the big American stores. This year, it will price match any of the Walmart stores for their doorstopper deals. It has also matched some of the pre-Friday sales, including selling batches of Playstation 4 and Xbox One games for just $ 49. Of course, Walmart is among the many stores price matching against the online retail giant.

The free eBook on Amazon Kindle is definitely not the only great deal this Black Friday. The retail giant has also confirmed that there will be a 20% discount, at least, on all laptops running Windows 8. Most people may want to get their hands on a tablet computer, but there are still many benefits to owning a laptop device.

Smartphones are also things people want, and Amazon is not disappointing. One of the latest announcements is the Samsung Galaxy S III, which will be available without a contract from Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile. There is a monthly fee, but it is possible to choose not to pay for a month and not have to deal with bad credit ratings or late fees. The device will not work until a payment is made, suiting those who regularly travel for business and find their American phone useless.

Even UK customers are benefitting from the Black Friday sales, despite not celebrating Thanksgiving and never following the Black Friday trend. This year sees a number of great offerings, from DVD boxsets to SatNavs, watches and nail kits. The deals will continue for a week, making it the time for many to look out for the perfect Christmas gift.

There are many more great Black Friday deals this year with the free Amazon Kindle eBook. Some of them include cameras, Bluetooth speakers and televisions. It is going to be a busy time of year and the free eBook is likely worth downloading. Check it for all the tips for making the most of the day and stopping it from ruining Thanksgiving for the family. It also offers great gift ideas ready for Christmas next month.

Black Friday 2013: Amazon deals include free Kindle eBook, laptops on sale - Examiner.com

The new Black Friday 2013 Amazon deals continue on Monday, Nov. 25, as there are multiple items across the website on special. Among them are a free Black Friday 2013 eBook for the Kindle eReaders, as well as savings on Windows 8 laptops. The latest deals extend for different durations as Amazon.com heads into Thanksgiving and Black Friday this week.

According to Holiday Gift Nation on Nov. 25, the Black Friday 2013 handbook by Juliana Yates is free for the next five days on Amazon. The guide includes tips and resources to help shoppers find the best deals online, learn about the hottest electronics, toys and gifts to get girls, boys, women or men this holiday season. The eBook, normally $ 2.99 on the site, works for the Kindle platform on various devices including the Kindle Fire HD or HDX, Paperwhite, iPad's, and computers with the Kindle app installed. The guide is free on Amazon’s site for download for the next five days.

In addition to that deal, Amazon is offering 20% or more off Windows 8 laptops for their "Gold Box Deal of the Day"Among the options are touchscreen Ultrabooks by Samsung, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 convertible touchscreen laptop, and an ASUS 10.1-inch laptop for just $ 239.00. While many customers may be picking up tablets, getting a new laptop for the price of (or less than) an iPad tablet isn't a bad deal since they tend to include keyboards and higher processing capacities for more productivity.

One other deal prominently displayed on Amazon's site is the Samsung Galaxy S III with no contract on Boost Mobile or Virgin Mobile. The smartphones are priced at $ 259.99, and will work with either Boost Mobile or Virgin Mobile. These particular services let customers pay monthly, but there is no contract binding them, so if they miss a payment for a month, they aren't hit with late fees, but they won't be able to use the phone until they pay again. That certainly makes it more convenient for changing to a new phone or leaving the phone unpaid if one goes away on a trip and doesn't need it for a month or so.

Amazon's Black Friday Deals Week continues for the next week, through Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The website is still being mysterious about most of their deals, although some categories feature "Deals calendars" that customers may want to look at for details on upcoming sale prices on different items.

Next-gen Kindle Paperwhite to feature 300ppi display and lighter body - GSMArena.com (blog)

The next generation of Amazon Kindle Paperwhite e-Book reader is going to feature a 300ppi screen and a lighter shell, insider sources claim. The higher pixel density display of the next Kindle Paperwhite is also going to be complemented by enhanced typography.

In comparison, the current Paperwhite packs a 212ppi display, so the update should definitely make a difference. Moreover, there will be additional hardware improvements over the current model. A prototype unit has been spotted touting a display that's even with the bezels, not recessed. Additionally, Amazon has gone with glass rather than plastic for the display surface. Happily, the weight of the reader isn't affected and is in fact lighter.

The sides will feature a new type of buttons that can be squeezed in order to give a better haptic feedback. The new button layout will allow the page changes to happen without users having to reach over with their thumbs. The overall shape of the next Paperwhite will be more angular with chamfered edges.

On the software side, Amazon will not be doing any major overhauls. The only major addition will be the introduction of a new typeface. If the source of the information is to be believed, we will see the next version of the Kindle Paperwhite hit store shelves as early as next year.
