Amazon releases Fire OS 3.1 for Kindle Fire HD and HDX tablets - Inquirer

ONLINE RETAIL GIANT Amazon announced the release of Fire OS 3.1 on Monday, a software update for the Kindle Fire HD and HDX tablets.

Fire OS 3.1 brings some new bits and bobs to Amazon’s latest tablet lineup, the Kindle Fire HD and the 7in and 8.9in Kindle Fire HDX tablets.

Amazon Kindle VP Peter Larsen said, “The response to our new family of Kindle Fire tablets has been fantastic, and we’re excited to add new features we think our customers will love.”

Chief among these new features is Goodreads integration, a feature that allows users to see what their friends are reading, review and rate books, and share favourite snippets with Amazon’s book-reading community.

Second screen support is next on the list, with the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX letting users share content with the TV, turning the tablet into a makeshift remote control. At present, only Samsung Smart TVs and the Playstation 3 (PS3) are supported, but Amazon is promising that support for the Playstation 4 (PS4) is coming soon.

Amazon clearly is looking to win over the business crowd with its Fire OS 3.1 update too, as the update gives the tablets the ability to hookup to secure enterprise WiFi networks and access corporate apps documents and resources like Sharepoint, a native VPN client for instant access to corporate networks, and a native Simple Certificate Exchange Protocol (SCEP) client to retrieve digital certificates for secure resources.

Support for WiFi printing is also included in the Fire OS 3.1 update, another feature that might convince business users to opt for a Kindle over an iPad.

Other features of the update include voice dictation support, Cloud Collections for organising books, One-Tap Archive for freeing up space, and performance and battery life improvements.

Amazon’s Fire OS 3.1 update is available to download now. ยต
